Best gyms in San Diego:
Balanced Fitness and Health
Balanced Fitness and Health is a community gym driven by you.
Roberto S. says about Balanced Fitness and Health:
I’ve worked with Coach Kevin since late 2020 and he has helped me build the muscle foundation I wish I had in high school. By incorporating elements of multiple approaches, from Olympic lifting to CrossFit, martial arts and functional training, I am stronger and healthier than at any other point in my life.
Some trainers focus too narrowly on a client’s goals, at the expense of building the foundation of strength that everyone needs to succeed at the gym or athletics otherwise. Now, everything I do is easier, from lifting at the gym to walking the dog and lifting furniture. Balanced Fitness is a wonderful, chill, laid-back gym that’s a nice reprieve from some of the other gyms down here. Rodrigo is super cool and the memberships are very reasonable. They recently reopened their climbing wall, too, and have classes and training for that as well!

Personal Trainer San Diego – Iron Orr Fitness – Outdoor Gym San Diego
Starr P. says about Personal Trainer San Diego – Iron Orr Fitness – Outdoor Gym San Diego:
I’ve had previous experience working with personal trainers at several other gyms across San Diego, but Iron Orr is hands down my favorite and has exceeded all my expectations so far. On my first consult with Paul, he took the time to ask about my background, goals, and assess my level of fitness.
I got paired with Shirlley, who is AMAZING and the best personal trainer I’ve worked with. She is incredibly knowledgeable, always pushes and challenges me, listens well and tailors workouts to my needs. In the past, I tend to get bored very easily with workouts but that doesn’t happen with Shirlley because she mixes things up and constantly keeps me on my toes. I also appreciate that she takes time to educate me on proper form and makes insightful observations that I otherwise wouldn’t have realized working out on my own.
As someone who used to dread getting out of bed in the mornings to drag myself to the gym, I actually look forward to training, thanks to Shirlley!
I’ve had experiences before with other personal trainers who try way too hard and try to oversell you on themselves. You don’t have to worry about that at Iron Orr – they are the real deal. Their trainers are experienced and personable.
Their no-nonsense, results-oriented approach has won me over. Plus the facilities are excellent – it’s not overcrowded like most gyms, it’s clean, well-maintained, and equipped with pretty much everything you need to get a quality workout.

CrossFit Humanity
Cris Z. says about CrossFit Humanity:
This place is amazing. From the facility to the people, to the programming, they have it down. The owner is a great guy, he’ll always stop to say hi to everyone whether he’s on the phone working or working out with the members.
All of the coaches are friendly, knowledgeable, and kind. I don’t participate in CrossFit right now and was looking for a good gym where I could begin and also maintain my other fitness training and Humanity is the place to be.
Not only is their staff smart and kind but they offer CrossFit, Yoga with their amazing manager Stephanie, they have an option 24/7 hour access outside of CrossFit and they even have a childcare program.
I would highly recommend this gym to anyone new to CrossFit to learn, advanced people who want to compete, or anyone who needs a good gym and is looking for a community of amazing humans. 10/10! This place rocks.

Xplicit Fitness
Michelle G. says about Xplicit Fitness:
I have been working out at Xplicit for almost 10 years. The trainers are fun, very knowledgeable, motivating and while you work out they help you with your form, make you laugh, give you nutrition tips and just are overall great people.
The classes are smaller and you have plenty of room but great energy. Recently, they redesigned their program and move their facility. Everyone gets their own station with a punching bag, weights, mat and anything else you need for your work out.
The entire workout is on a monitor for you to refer back to what you were doing and proper form the entire time. The trainers are also walking around encouraging you and tweaking your form as needed.
The punching bag measures the force of your punch as well as how many you did. Everything you do is at max for three minutes so you never get bored and you can move at your own pace the entire time.
The workouts are amazing and these guys have been instrumental for my physique, fitness, and overall well-being at times in my life when I really needed it. I highly recommend trying class and you will be hooked and won’t want to work out anywhere else.

North Park Fitness
Ozzy A. says about North Park Fitness:
Great place to get a workout in. They’ve done a great job of efficiently using their space to provide a variety of machines while not making the space feel over crowded. They don’t have showers, but do have small lockers you can use to store your stuff while you workout.
I don’t understand some of the hate about masks on here. Wear a mask if you want, or don’t. Their staff do work on increasing ventilation with open windows and fans. They also do a pretty solid job of keeping sanitizing spray and paper towels stocked for everyone to keep equipment sanitized. I also see their staff sanitizing mats too. If you’re at a high risk of getting sick, maybe working out at home or outside is a better option for you.
I’ve been with them for about 2.5 years and feel they’ve done a pretty good job in maintaining and updating their equipment. They’ve also done a solid job of keeping their members updated through challenges posed by COVID and local Public Health orders.m through email and their app.

Fury Functional Fitness
Danielle W. says about Fury Functional Fitness:
I took a 6am FUEL class taught by Alex as a ClassPass drop in for the first time this morning and I really enjoyed it! I often circuit the Pilates Megaformer, Barre, and dance classes for my workouts but I will definitely be back for more classes at Fury Functional Fitness.
The FUEL class was challenging without being discouraging for a beginner. It was a mix of weighted bar, kettle bell, medicine ball and body weight movements in intervals and there are many weights to choose from to provide a good workout without risk of injury.
Alex’s(as well as other classmates) energy at 6am is what made the class stand out to me because I definitely need morning motivation to power through a workout. He was also very informative of technique and range of motion to help get the best workout and also provided modifications depending on your skill level or physical ability.
The gym itself is centrally located in the plaza(same plaza as Taco Bell) on the corner of Genesee and Balboa but in the back lot. It was easy to find and there was a ton of parking spaces. When you walk into the studio, there’s the front desk to the left, a hallway leading to cubbies for belongings, bathrooms, and the group workout area in the very back of the studio.
There was also a personal training session going on during the class with Laura and a client in their own section which I thought was great that they can offer personal instruction!
